What is Tesco.com?Tesco.com (AKA Dotcom) is the online arm of the UK’s most successful retailer. Originally launched in 1996, and registered as a company since 2000, we are a fast-growing and innovative part of the business, selling everything from cakes to computers, and DVDs to deckchairs.
Back when we started, Dotcom comprised a handful of computers in one office. Our first annual turnover was around £25M, and we initially made deliveries from a single Tesco store. These days our typical turn-over is around £1.5Bn and we currently employee thousands of people in stores, depots, fulfilment centres and offices in the UK and beyond.
Dotcom Grocery, where it all began, remains an integral part of our business. This service allows customers to do their food shopping from the comfort of their armchair. The ability to deliver from over 300 stores nationwide and our commitment to customer service have helped to make us the most successful online grocery retailer in the world. Our grocery site now has more than 1 million active customers, and makes around 380,000 deliveries in a typical week. Our new Click and Collect service, which is unique to Tesco, allows customers to order online and then collect their groceries from specially created pods located in our store car parks.
But there’s more to Dotcom than beans and bananas. Tesco Direct, established in 2006, provides an enormous range of home appliances, furniture, computers and much more. Customers can browse our products online or in our twice-yearly Direct Catalogue. Orders can be made on the web, by phone or from any of our Direct Desks, located in our stores. Customers can collect products from our Direct desks and collection points nationwide, or have them delivered door to door.
We have other strings to our bow, too. Our award-winning Wine Site delivers more than 800 types of wine, by the case, to customers nationwide, and gives them the opportunity to subscribe to our wine club magazine and get exclusive access to special events, such as wine tasting workshops.
Then there’s our Entertainment Site, selling a vast range of CDs, games, DVDs and downloads. customers can also choose from a range of around 1 million books. And our Online Clothing site allows customers to choose from the latest fashions with the click of a mouse.
